Kalyan brings the same intensity and passion he has for his professional activities to his extra-curricular activities.  He is an avid designer, creator, artist, and cook - all with a spicy and unconventional wild side.
Kalyan grew up in central India. His childhood was filled with chasing restless curiosities, pulling pranks, catching frogs and climbing trees, flying kites, stealing mangoes from his neighbor’s backyard, playing cricket, and, of course, watching John Wayne movies on Saturday afternoons.

He learned eagerly from his father on their long walks, where he peppered him with questions like “why does the moon walk with us?”, and drank up  stories about calculus, satellites, atoms, and parapsychology.
His older brother introduced him to art, model building, rock music, and making fireworks, all of which he continues to this day.

Kalyan has a unique sense of aesthetics he calls  “casual modern.”  He tempers the minimalist, but overly formal, hard edges of modern style with a more inviting, often rustic aesthetic—a sort of Jeff Foxworthy style, wearing jeans and a sportcoat.

His knowledge of algorithms, structural mechanics, properties of materials, and ergonomics all play into his design enterprise. He has designed and actualized various artifacts, displays, bars, lounge chairs, ceiling fixtures, couches,  home theaters,  and even his current house using this aesthetic.    He also utilizes his engineering know-how to design model airplanes, boats, and audio systems.

Kalyan’s unconventional designs require that he regularly get into his workshop to develop them. He is a half-decent wood worker, and is now attempting to get into metal fabrication and 3D printing to push the design and fabrication envelope.

After an art hiatus of over three decades, his wife, fed up with all the saw dust and noise, encouraged him to pick up brush and hone up his watercolor skills, so he did.
He is a great admirer of Chinese brush painting and Japanese Sumi-e style, an artform characteristically  minimalist and efficient—precisely the characteristics he strives for in his designs. Just as with all his endeavors, he has blended and created interdisciplinary techniques to paint new artwork: a Virginia bald eagle, Jimi Hendrix, and much more.
Kalyan is a foodie with a discerning taste. When he enjoys something he eats, he quickly reverse-engineers it and makes it his own. Indeed, necessity (of good food) is the mother of invention. He has been making pita pizza and sausage rice since the ‘90s because he could not afford to eat out.
Here too, he fearlessly innovates to improve scalability and usability of food production and delivery.  He makes habanero hot sauces with turmeric and cilantro to appeal to his over sensitive palette, and uses a food dropper to fill gol gappas, a wicked spicy, Indian street food.
